Standing Committee recommends inviting Italy

Geneva (26 September 2011): The Standing Committee, meeting in Warsaw (Poland) on 19 September 2011, recommended to the Contracting States to invite Italy to accede to the Convention.  The recommendation is based on the report by the Inspection Team, which visited Italy from 5 to 9 September 2011.  The purpose of the visit was to ensure that the arrangements made by Italy complied with the conditions of the Convention and its Annexes.  The Depositary of the Convention (the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs) will now write to all Contracting States and asked them whether they object to the invitation.  If there are no objections within a period of 4 months, Italy will then be officially invited to accede to the Convention.  The accession will become effective once Italy has ratified the Convention.
